In the west, the area includes the Eastern part of the central solid mass. In the center, the country is crossed by the Saone in north, then the Rhone which crosses each department of the area. This central part is thus characterized by its valleys but also by its typical landscapes. In the part more in the east of the area, the relief is broken. Water and the mountain are the two strong characteristics of the area. Alpine glaciers, many lakes and water levels and great rivers ensure the area an abundant water and of quality. The average and the high mountain constitute the natural framework of the major part of the area: more half of the territory is thus at an altitude higher than 500 meters.
